Also known as Dev Deepavali, the festival celebrates the triumph of Lord shiva against the evil demon Tripurasura. It is believed that Lord shiva defeated the demon on this day, and hence, Dev Diwali is also known as Tripura Utsav. Dev Diwali is one of the largest festivals celebrated. Kartik Purnima is also celebrated as Dev Deepawali (the Diwali festival of the Gods) and marks the 15th lunar day of the Hindu month of Kartik. It is celebrated prominently in the city of Varanasi and other Bhojpuri-speaking regions of Uttar Pradesh.
